The Mt Misery event is the second race in the 2019 TRSA Series. You don’t need to be a series competitor to enter – all are welcome.  For more information on the series, click here.

Mt Misery has something for everyone, including a short course on some lovely trails and a medium and long courses that include the steep and challenging summit of Mt Misery (528m) but you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Mt Lofty Ranges in one direction, and the Adelaide plains in another. There will be plenty of opportunities to spot some local Mt Misery wildlife including the infamous goat herds and perhaps Eddie the Emu will make another appearance?

Features

  • Magnificent scenery, beautifully designed and constructed trails, kangaroos, emus and other birds.
  • Medals for the first 3 male & female runners in each event and a 1:1 nutrition consult with Erin from Ultra Appetites for both the male and female long course winners.
  • 3 water stations along the 24 km course (including one that’s passed twice), 2 along the 15 km course , and 1 along the 8km course.
  • Random draw prizes.

Carpooling Required

<
We require carpooling (minimum 2 per vehicle, ideally 3 or 4) for this event wherever possible in order to minimise congestion and parking issues around the venue start area. For most people, this means coming to the event with some friends or colleagues.  If you can’t find someone to carpool with, we suggest posting to the Trail Running SA Lounge on Facebook to link up with others.

Trail Running SA has a range of merchandise available via the online store. You can order online for pickup at the event. There will also be limited stock available at the event.

Key dates

  • Your age category is calculated according to your age as at 1st January 2019.
  • Sunday, 9th of June 2019: Get your entry in by midnight to guarantee your name will be printed on your bib.
  • Friday, 14th June 2019: Entries close at midday. There will be no race-day registrations.

Cancellations and changes

Please do not contact Trail Running SA requesting a cancellation or change until you have read the procedure for cancellations and changes here. There is a $10 fee plus any price difference for changes or cancellations.

Course Closures

Our policy and methodology for determining course closure times is here. All courses close at 11:30am, giving the following cut-off paces:

  • 24 km run: closes at 8:45min/km.
  • 15 km run: closes at 11:15min/km.
  • 8 km run / walk: closes at 18:45min/km..

Walkers

Welcome! We permit walkers into the shortest distance only. This is to ensure that everyone is back safely and accounted for in time for presentations. Although we ask during registration whether you are walking or running, we don’t time the walking event separately to the running event. You can run if you like too.

If you are a slower runner doing the longer distances, check the cut-off paces above.

Start/Finish Location

Head to Croft Rd car park, opposite Anderson Hill Winery, and 2.3 kilometres west of the intersection of Croft Rd, Cold Store Rd and Fox Creek Rd and then follow car parking marshal instructions. See below for maps/directions.

Again, PLEASE CARPOOL WHERE POSSIBLE – this makes life much easier for everyone on the morning once you arrive at the start and our volunteer marshals direct you where to park. Fewer cars means less of a walk to the start line.

Getting there

    • Follow the following directions:
      • From the South-Eastern Freeway, take the Woodside-Balhannah turnoff. In Woodside, take the signposted turnoff to the left, along Tiers Rd, to Lenswood. When you reach Lenswood, turn left then right immediately, into Cold Store Rd. Ignoring turnoffs to left and right along the way, follow this to the intersection with Croft Rd. Then turn left.
        From the bottom of the Freeway (where it joins Portrush and Cross Roads), it’s 38 km to the race start. Allow 40 minutes to get there.
      • From Athelstone shopping centre, Gorge Rd, follow Gorge Rd to Cudlee Creek. Continue after passing the hotel on the left. Immediately after The Cudlee Café on the left, fork right into the Lobethal road, and after a kilometre, turn right into Fox Creek Rd, then right again into Croft Rd.
        It’s 28 kilometres to the race start from the supermarket shopping centre (with the ugly tower) Athelstone. Allow 35 minutes.

Car Parking

Please listen to our volunteer car parking marshals on the day. We have a car parking plan in place to ensure we don’t cause any issues for other trail users in the area. Please do NOT park in the Anderson Hill Winery car park or at the top mountain biking car park. You’ll be directed through the gate and there will be more car parking marshals to point you in the right direction from there. Please listen to their instructions and know the limits of your car. Please take care when entering the parking area and watch out for people lining up for the toilets.

Toilets

To avoid long queues at the portaloos when you get there, please use a public toilet on the way. There are some on every approach route, listed as follows:

  • Athelstone: the BP service station on Gorge Rd, and Foxfield Oval on Maryvale Rd.
  • Woodside: opposite the Tiers Rd turnoff to Lenswood, on the south side of the Woodside Hotel.
  • Cudlee Creek: by the junction of Gorge Rd and Redden Drive, which is the signposted turnoff to Gorge Wildlife Park, and (if you’re coming from Adelaide) just after the Cudlee Creek Tavern.
  • Lenswood: on the north side of the road from Norton Summit, 900 m west of the junction of Lobethal Rd with Cold Store Rd.
  • Lobethal: on Bartholomew St, just off Main Street, and another on Main Street, opposite the turnoff to Woodside Rd.

There will be portaloos by the race start, and plenty of scrub. Do not use the Anderson Hill Winery toilets which are private and reserved for customers.

Mandatory gear

  • Bring your own bottle belt or hydration pack – there are no cups of water at the drink stations.
  • Mobile phone. We recommend programming the first aid number 0491 017 636 and backup first aid number 0412 466 972 in. These numbers are also written on the back of your bib.

At the race

Bag drop

There will be a bag drop tent. It will be unsecured and not supervised – bags are left at own risk. Don’t leave valuables at the bag drop tent.

Bib pickup procedure

Electronic timing bibs will not be mailed out and will be available for pickup at the event. Please allow sufficient time to pick up your bib with chip attached. You don’t need to lookup your bib number before the event, but if you want to, see here. We recommend arriving 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to the event start time in order to allow plenty of time to pick up your bib. You may need to park a few minutes walk from the start so please allow sufficient time to walk there.

After you have entered online and checked that all information provided is correct, there are 3 steps that you need to follow on arrival:

  1. On event day go straight to the “ENTRY DETAILS” display boards. All entrants will be listed and sorted by surname. Find your name. Check that your entry details are still correct, especially the race and category you have entered. Remember your race number and start time as you will need it for the next step.
  2. Go to the “RACE NUMBER BIBS” baskets (all numbers are filed numerically). Find your race number and take it out.
  3. If any of your entry details are wrong e.g. your name, category or gender, or you are changing races, proceed to the “REGISTRATION MANAGER” area.

Chip timing procedure

Entrants must make sure the data that timers have is correct, so must follow these basic procedures:

  • A timing tag linked to you and your race number will be stuck to the back of your race number bib.
  • Attach the bib at waist height to the outside front of whatever top you will be wearing at all timing points. Do not bend or fold the tag or tamper with it.
  • Your time and number are recorded when you pass through a timing point provided your race number bib is visible. Covering it with clothing or your hands as you operate a watch will prevent it recording.
  • If there are several starts for different races, make sure you start at the correct time.
  • Run or walk over the start/finish timing mat at your start time. This lets officials know you are on the course.
  • When you cross the finish timing point, walk & stay in order in the finish chute until you are past the backup cameras.
  • Race number bibs are disposable & do not need to be returned.
  • If you cut the course short (for example by skipping a lap, or taking a shortcut), do not cross over the mat as we may inadvertently think you have won the race. If you do not complete your course you must return your bib to the timing van near the end of the finish chute.
  • If you lose your race number bib during the race you must go to the timing van near the end of the finish chute as soon as you cross the finish timing mat.
  • Officials will phone and search for anyone who has a start time but no finish time, so it is vital you do not use someone else’s number and you go over the timing mat so your start and finish are recorded.

Be careful

Beware of slippery patches on the tracks. Bare, packed, earth covered by green moss may be very slippery. Carry your phone on you when running as it could be critical if you get lost or injured.

Course Marking

The signs to look out for:

  • Red arrows at turnoffs. All turnoffs will be marked with arrows, and ribbons are never used for this purpose.
  • Red-and-white ribbons to confirm that you’re on the right track.
  • Wrong way signs where needed.
  • Course divergence signs where needed.

The red-and-white striped ribbons will be placed at frequent intervals (200-400m) to confirm that you are on the right track. Wherever you need to turn off, there will be an arrow sign. If you stop seeing any signs, turn back. Do not carry on and get yourself even more lost. All runners are expected to carry a mobile phone.

Drink station and refreshments

Bring your own bottle belts or hydration packs (Camelbaks), because there will be no cups of water at the drink stations. Soft bottles and bottles of water will be available for sale at the registration table.

There will be water, fruit, crisps and Maurice’s delicious brownies, as well as a commercial coffee van and a BBQ being offered by the Cudlee Creek CFS crew, at the race start/finish. At the drink stations along the course, there will be water and lollies.

After the race, you may like to consider lunch at the Anderson Hill Winery which overlooks the race start. It’s essential to book.

Insurance

The organiser of the event, Trail Running SA, has public liability insurance and volunteer’s insurance cover. This does not include personal accident insurance for competitors. We recommend that you arrange your own personal accident insurance, ambulance cover and income protection insurance before participating in the event to cover any unforeseen personal costs you may incur due to ambulance trips, medical expenses or time off work due to injuries sustained whilst participating in the event. For information regarding costs of ambulance or helicopter rescue refer to the SA Ambulance Service website.
