Features

This race passes through really majestic landscape, consisting of rugged hills and valleys, all thickly wooded. For several kilometres you run along ridge tops from which you get sweeping views of the Mt Lofty Ranges in one direction, and the Adelaide plains in another. Most of the long courses, and all of the short one, are on fire access tracks which are hilly but easy going underfoot, allowing you to enjoy the scenery and chat to other runners. But the longer courses include a steep and challenging deviation over the summit of Mt Misery (528m). So you can enjoy this event either as a serious race or as a casual fun run.

Trail Running SA Series

This race is the second event in the Trail Running SA Series 2016, although you don’t need to be a series participant to enter – all are welcome.

King and Queen of the Mountain

And a new feature of our 2016 event is the King and Queen of the Mountain – a race within a race! the 3km climb to the summit and the 1.5km descent is the steepest, most technical section of the existing Mt Misery 24km and 16km course, and definitely worthy of a King and Queen of the Mountain title.

Competitors who register for the Mt Misery 24km and 16km events are automatically entered into the King or Queen of the Mountain race, so despite not being awarded overall line honours for the Mt Misery event, you still have the chance to win this separate section of the race.

Prizes will be awarded for the King and Queen of the Mountain, so look out for the Red Bull branding within the course and start your ascent!

Train hard, run strong and become the King or Queen of the Mountain. Good Luck!

Start Location

Croft Rd car park, opposite Anderson Hill (formerly Yangoora) Winery, and 2.3 kms west of the intersection of Croft Rd, Cold Store Rd and Fox Creek Rd. There is parking space at this location. See below for maps/directions.

Getting there

  • Option 1: Paste the following into google maps:
    • -34.887488,+138.823467
  • Option 2:
    •  click here for a google map
  • Option 3:
    • Follow the following directions:
      • From the South-Eastern Freeway, take the Woodside-Balhannah turnoff. In Woodside, take the signposted turnoff to the left, along Tiers Rd, to Lenswood. When you reach Lenswood, turn left then right immediately, into Cold Store Rd. Ignoring turnoffs to left and right along the way, follow this to the intersection with Croft Rd. Then turn left.
From the bottom of the Freeway (where it joins Portrush and Cross Rds), it’s 38 km to the race start. Allow 40 minutes to get there.
      • From Athelstone shopping centre, Gorge Rd, follow Gorge Rd to Cudlee Creek. Continue after passing the hotel on the left. Immediately after The Cudlee Cafe on the left, fork right into the Lobethal road, and after a kilometre, turn right into Fox Creek Rd, then right again into Croft Rd.
It’s 28 kms to the race start from the Woolworths shopping centre Athelstone. Allow 35 minutes.

Toilets

To avoid long queues at the portaloos when you get there, please use a public toilet on the way. There are some on every approach route, listed as follows:

  • Athelstone:  the BP service station on Gorge Rd, and Foxfield Oval on Maryvale Rd.
  • Woodside: opposite the turnoff to Lenswood, which is Tiers Rd. On the south side of the Woodside Hotel.
  • Cudlee Creek: by the junction of Gorge Rd and Redden Drive, which is the signposted turnoff to Gorge Wildlife Park, and (if you’re coming from Adelaide) just after the Cudlee Creek Tavern.
  • Lenswood: on the north side of the road from Norton Summit, 900 m west of the junction of Lobethal Rd with Cold Store Rd.
  • Lobethal: on Bartholomew St, just off Main Street, and another on Main Street, opposite the turnoff to Woodside Rd.

There will be portaloos by the race start, and plenty of scrub. There are toilets behind the Anderson Hill Winery restaurant, but consider these as restricted to customers.

Start times

  • 24 km run at 8.00 a.m.
  • 16km run/walk at 8:30 a.m.
  • 8 km run/walk at 9.00 a.m.

At the race

Bib and chip pickup procedure

Bibs will not be mailed out and will be available for pickup on the morning of the event. Please allow sufficient time to pick up your bib and chip. We recommend arriving 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to the event start time in order to allow plenty of time to pick up your bib. You may need to park a few minutes walk from the start so please allow sufficient time to walk there.

TRSA is using state of the art electronic timing at its events for safety as well as to provide speedy and accurate results. After you have entered online and checked that all information provided is correct, there are 3 steps that you need to follow on arrival:

  1. On event day go straight to the “ENTRY DETAILS” display boards. All entrants will be listed and sorted by surname. Find your name. Check that your entry details are still correct, especially the race and category you have entered. Remember your race number and start time.
  2. Go to the “RACE NUMBER BIBS” baskets (all numbers are filed numerically). Find your race number and take it out. Note: don’t worry if the colour you have is different to a friend who is doing the same event.
  3. Go to the “CHIP COLLECTION” trestle. Show your race number to collect your timing chip. This is the time to tell staff if any of your entry details are wrong eg your name, category or gender, or you are taking over someone else’s entry, or you are changing races etc

Chip timing procedure

Entrants must make sure the data timers have is correct so must follow these basic procedures:

  • Your timing chip is in a blue plastic housing attached to a velcroed band. Its number must match your race bib number. Strap the band to your left ankle with the blue housing facing out. Test that it is secure. If you are not happy with the velcro grip, exchange the band for a new one.
  • Your time and number are recorded when you step on a timing mat. If there are several starts for different races, make sure you start at the correct time.
  • Run or walk over the start/finish timing mat at your start time. This lets officials know you are on the course
  • When you cross the finish timing mat, walk & stay in order in the finish chute. Your chip will be removed by officials at the end of the chute.
  • Dead heats are decided by the first chip to be detected ie left foot on a timing mat.
  • Timing chips are not disposable & must be returned. If you finish, officials will take the chip from you at the finish line.
  • If you do not complete your course you must return your chip to the timing van near the end of the finish chute
  • If you lose your chip during the race you must go to the timing van near the end of the finish chute as soon as you cross the finish timing mat
  • Officials will phone and search for anyone who has a start time but no finish time, so it is vital you do not use someone else’s number and you go over the timing mat so your start and finish are recorded

Be careful

Beware of slippery patches on the tracks. Bare, packed,  earth covered by green moss may be very slippery.

Course Marking

The signs to look out for:

  • Red arrows at turnoffs.
  • Black-and-yellow ribbons to warn you that you are approaching a turnoff.
  • Red-and-white ribbons to confirm that you’re on the right track.
  • Wrong way signs where needed.
  • Course divergence signs in 3 places.

Drink station and refreshments

There will be a water station servicing both courses at the intersection of the Mawson and Heysen Trails, which is 3.5 kms from the race start. This is almost the half-way point on the short course; while the longer-course runners pass this point on the way out and on the way back, after doing 9 kms.
There will be another water station on Koch Track servicing all three courses. By this time, the longer course runners will have done 13 kms. This is two kms from the finish of the 8 km course.
For the longest course, there will be a water station at the Fox Creek Rd car park, after the 24 km runners will have done 19 kms.
Bring your own  bottle belts or hydration packs (camelbaks), because there will be no cups of water at the drink stations. Red Bull will be served in cups at the second and third drink stations. Some people like hand-held bottles; but you may need your hands for the scramble up to and down from Mt Misery on the longer course. For those who forget to bring water containers, soft bottles (at $3.30 each) and small plastic bottles of spring water (at 35c each) will be available for sale at the bib pick-up table.
There will be water, fruit, crisps and Maurice’s delicious brownies and protein balls, as well as  a commercial coffee van, at the race start/finish.

Results

Will be available immediately. Live scoring will enable you to see your result on a smartphone within minutes of finishing.

Award presentations

At approximately 10.00 a.m. for the 8km event, and 11.30 for the 16 and 24 km events. The random draw prizes will be after the second presentation.

After the event

Anderson Hill Winery serves pizza, wine, coffee and cheese platters in a glass-sided room and outdoor area with beautiful views, where wine at cellar door prices is available. This is open on weekends only,  from 11 a.m. onwards for drinks, and from 12.00 for food as well. It may get very busy after this; so it’s essential to book, especially if wet weather is forecast when you will need an inside table.
There is The Cudlee Cafe in Cudlee Creek for those returning home that way.
There is the Providore Cafe in the main street of Woodside for those returning that way.
