Twilight 2024 race briefing

Friday 15 November, 2024

Welcome runners!

On behalf of the TRSA committee, we welcome you to the inaugural “Twilight Series” Race 1 at the Happy Valley Reservoir.
We are very excited to introduce this fun event on a Friday night to kick-start your weekend. We hope you have a lot of fun.

Our vision was for a low-key event – we are managing the bibs and timing ourselves – so be patient with us. It’s not the high-production TRSA event you see during the year and sorry, no brownies, but we’ll do watermelon!

Critical safety information

Mandatory gear

Hydration vessel – we are a cup free event. You MUST carry your own drinking flask or cup. There are no aid stations on the courses in this event, but there are SA Water drinking fountains around the long course  – either drink or fill your hydration vessel from the fountains. There will be water at the finish line but you will need your vessels there too.

Mobile phone – please carry a phone and save our emergency number to your phone: 0491 017 636 (also on the back of your race bib).

Emergency Plus app

All runners should download the Emergency Plus app onto their mobile phones. This app will dial 000 for you at the tap of a button and provide you with a GPS location and address to give the operator.

Caution

Snakes – be aware of snakes on course. We recommend that all runners carry snake bite bandages.

Withdrawals on the day

If you make the tough decision to pull out during your run, you MUST inform us immediately by calling or texting the safety phone number on the back of your bib. It is critical that you do this – lost competitors will result in us enacting our search and rescue protocols.

Helping injured or ill runners

If you come across a person who needs help, please stop and assist them by dialling the safety phone, 000 or activating the Emergency Plus app.

** Insurance **

A reminder that your personal insurance is not covered by your entry fees. It is up to you to ensure that you have adequate insurance in place should you suffer a medical episode or emergency.

Event details

Happy Valley is mainly wide walking/cycling trails with a few small rises along the course, so we are expecting some reasonably quick times for both events

Please familiarise yourself with your course and download the map from our website.

Dogs are NOT ALLOWED.

  • Long course: Start time 6:00 pm
  • Short course: Start time 6:10 pm

Your finish time will reflect start time (gun time) and not the time you cross the start line.

The Start/Finish location is inside the Happy Valley Reservoir accessed from the Happy Valley Reservoir Reserve South Carpark off of Chandlers Hill Rd.

Please be careful on Chandlers Hill Rd as it is a 70km zone and there are speed cameras upon approaching the carpark.

The strong message from our SA Water friends is to use the toilets NOT the nature reserve! There are toilets at the start area and various points along the course. Cooperating with requirements like this means that we can keep coming back.

Check the entry list to make sure you are entered in the correct event and start time. If it is wrong, please see the Registration Manager on the day at least 20 mins before start time. Do not email or message us on Facebook.

We have a self-service bib pick-up system:

  1. Check your bib number here. HINT: take a screen shot if you aren’t great at remembering numbers or are collecting multiple bibs.

  2. Get your bib from the baskets (self-service).

  3. If you can’t find your bib, then ask the rego team for help.

Allow at least 30 minutes prior to start time.

Your bib must be worn in front of you at around waist height. It should be visible at all times and unobstructed as you travel over the finish line.

The courses will be well marked but you should download the GPX files from the website.

We will also have a lead bike on the long course to show the way.

Markings to look out for:

  • Red arrows are used to indicate a turn or reinforce the course direction.

  • Red-and-white ribbons 200-400m apart confirm that you’re on the right track.

  • There are two locations where the two courses diverge and converge and signage will be in place to highlight these.

The cut-off time for both courses will be 7:45 pm – we need to leave the park by 8.00 pm when the gates are locked.

Sweepers will start at the rear of the field in both distances. They will aim to finish the course at the cut-off time or behind the last competitor (whichever is earlier).

*Sweepers are instructed to contact the safety phone if they encounter anyone in distress.

Don’t forget to thank the volunteers who have donated their time so that you can run.

Trained First Aiders will be stationed at the start/finish line.

If you need medical assistance approach any volunteer at the finish line to be directed to assistance.

If on course call the safety phone.

If it is a medical emergency call 000 or use the Emergency Plus app.

You may leave your personal bags at our bag drop area at your own risk. We do not supervise bags.

After your race

Presentations will be held by 7.30 pm for male and female 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters of both events.

As timing will be manual at this event, your results will not be available immediately. Once live, they will be provisional until midnight on Monday.

Once finished wander up to our refreshment table to enjoy some watermelon.
Signature Coffee Co will be onsite for coffees and smoothies and some assorted foods as well. Say hi to them as they are opening up especially for our event.

Winners prizes have been supplied by:

  • IO Merino
  •  Beckman Street Deli
  • Trail Running SA

Good luck

Hoping you have a lot of fun in beautiful surroundings in this committee’s first twilight event. Lace-up your shoes and let your adventure begin!

Best regards, TRSA Committee
